GAIA-FIELD Quick Start Guide
User Guides
This quick start guide will help you understand and perform initial setup for your GAIA-FIELD Gravimeter.
Topics Covered
- First start, warmup and battery charge
- Power Up and Standby
- Wi-Fi Connectivity
- Create a Project and Perform Initial Calibrations
- Take Measurements
- Data Export
First Start
- GAIA-FIELD will arrive with installed batteries at ~30% charge.
- Open the main GAIA-FIELD Peli Case lid using the twin catches and you will see the main GAIA-FIELD panel as per Image 1 below.
- Power On the GAIA-FIELD using a long (>5 s) press on the power button, you will see an LED sequence arounnd the core duroing start-up.
- The system will take ~2 minutes to fully boot up.
- The system is fully booted when the WiFi LED illuminated
- Connect the Dell Charger to the GAIA-FIELD Power USB the GAIA-FIELD will charge both batteries.
- At this point the GAIA-FIELD should be left to stabilise the Gravity sensor to optimum temperature for 6 hours - during this time gravity measurements will be unstable.

Overview of the GAIA-FIELD
- The GAIA-FIELD measures gravity using a specialist SMG Vibrating Beam MEMS accelerometer.
- The MEMS is housed in the GAIA-CORE with advanced electronics and thermal control. The GAIA-CORE is visible in the centre of your GAIA-FIELD.
- To enable automatic levelling the GAIA-CORE is mounted in a gimbal.
- The gimbal is manipulated prior to any measurement to ensure the MEMS sensor is pointing at Z (maximum gravity) to within 5 milli degrees.
- Around the GAIA-CORE are two 98Ah lithium batteries giving full day charge and control electronics for the system, user interface, gimbal control and GNSS.
- There is no user interface physically on the GAIA-FIELD itself besides status LEDs, inaddition there are no control buttons besides the main power button.
- All GAIA-FIELD control is via any smart device (such as Phone, Tablet or Laptop) connected via WiFi or USB-C.
Notes on Power Up and Standby
- Power On / Off using a long (>5 s) press on the power button
- GAIA-FIELD also has a standby mode / flight mode where the sensor is thermally controlled but all other systems including WiFi and charging are disabled.
- Enable or disable standby mode with a short (<3 s) press on the power button
- Full power up cycle takes 1-2 minutes
- Even with batteries discharged or removed the GAIA-FIELD can be started with the supplied USB-C charger connected
- In most cases it is not nessaary to remove the batteries - they charge faster in the GAIA-FIELD
Wi-Fi Connectivity
- On the rear of your GAIA-FIELD are several QR codes.
- Scan the ‘Connect’ QR code to save the Wi-Fi connection
- Ensure your smart device is connected to the correct Wi-Fi eg GAIA <Serial>
- If using a smart phone you may have to disable your cellular connection
- Scan the 'Control' QR code or enter http://192.168.9.1 to control the GAIA-FIELD via WiFI
- Enter http://192.168.8.1 to control the GAIA-FIELD via USB-C connection
- Note the USB-C connection is Ethernet Tether over USB-C - no drivers or software are required
- Multiple smart devices can connect to a single GAIA-FIELD
NOTE: Each GAIA-FIELD has a unique Wi-Fi connection
Start a Project
- Once you have connected to your GAIA-FIELD and loaded the control page you should see the UI Home Page.
- First create a new project via the Home menu
- Enter your project name and use the GNSS for you location / or enter the values manually.
Calibrate your device (Calibration Menu)
- It is recommeneded to perform some basic calibrations on your new device.
- Firstly ENSURE the GAIA-FIELD has been powered for at least 6 hours and there are no thermal control warnings
- Once thermally stable (>6hrs), and with the unit in and stable a quiet location go to Calibration Menu and select Start Tilt Calibration (~7 mins).
- Watch this video to learn more about Tilt Calibration process
- Review the TILT CALIBRTAION results if accepotable click Apply Tilt Cal
- Next perform a Drift Calibration (6-12 hours). Place the unit stable and quiet location and via the Calibvration menu chose Drift Calibration > Start.
- Switch the the measure screen to see and review the live data. Drift should be linear over the initial 6-12 hours after warm up but may change slowly over the initial few days.
- Watch this video to learn more about the Drift Calibration process
- Stop the Drift Cal with the stop button and select Calculate Drift Calibration
- Confirm suitable calibration and click Apply Drift Cal
Take a Gravity Measurement
- Once Tilt and Drift calibrations are complete you can begin to test your GAIA-FIELD taking readings. Open an new project and take measurements.
- We recommend contacting your supplier or SMG for onkline training and best practice guidance
